6 Awesome Things About The Lehigh Valley

Summer isn’t for a while yet, but if I’m not wrong, spring break is just around the corner!  That means that if you plan carefully, you can go on vacation!  So here are six great things about Bethlehem and the surrounding area!  Come and visit!

  1. We have history-Bethlehem was originally a Moravian village.  And if you need any more convincing, check out the A-list at the Sun Inn!
  2. We have candy-Just Born, creator of Peeps, Mike & Ikes, and other lovely treats, are based in the Lehigh Valley!
  3. We have food-I’m surprised that Billy’s Downtown Diner hasn’t been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins And Dives yet!  Here, we have a bunch of local resturants, and also the normal chains (if you’re into that stuff).
  4. We have shopping-Looking for home furnishings?  Main Street is full of antique furniture and scented candles (again, if you’re into that stuff).
  5. We have famous notability-Jeff, John, and Michael Andretti were all born in Bethlehem.  For chemistry buffs, Walter Snelling died in the neighboring city of Allentown.
  6. We have education-For those considering college, Bethlehem is home to Lehigh University.  Notable people like Kelly Monaco have gone to Northampton Community College as well.

And those are just some examples of awesome stuff to do here!  Visit Dorney Park (Angels fans, come on over!), visit the amazing historic sights of Burnside Plantation, or see the classic blacksmith do his work in the Historic District!  So come on!  What are you waiting for?

    Don’t forget music.
The closest thing I’ve had to a religious experience in this valley was covering the Bach Festival for the Morning Call, sitting outside Packer Chapel on the Lehigh campus on a gorgeous spring day, listening to the sounds of a choir coming through the open windows.

And if you broaden things to that city next door, Allentown is the birthplace of Keith Jarrett, a jazz pianist of ferocious compositional and improvisational ability.
If you’re interested, here’s a sample of one of his more approachable moments:

    Darn those copyright infringements.
This version is more discursive, but I thought I’d post it just in case you were interested.
