Mythodeath Today: Crash Landing

Okay, the final story in the five-part arc of Playing For Keeps, Mythodeath, is still a while away, ideas are swimming around in my head like fish swimming in a barrel to avoid getting shot.  I have at least four potential scenes, with two minor ones, and a plot twist that will leave you reeling!  And even though it’s probably gonna look different in the final draft, here’s what I have in mind for the first chapter.  But first, here’s what’s going on so far: Sophia, Burlida, and Jacob have, after multiple flight transfers, arrived in Orlando under the guise of a single mother and her two children.  Their mission-keep a certain someone who betrayed them in the past from killing a LOT of mortals using the various Audio-Animatronics, pyrotechnics, and other dangerous stuff at Walt Disney World-starting with the guests themselves.  With help from an immortal ally, they are flying over the Magic Kingdom on a really cool device called the Daedalus 500, which is sort of like a long, tandem scooter.  With rocket boosters.  All of a sudden, the green dragon from the Main Street Electrical Parade (they arrived late in the evening) comes to life, and shoots them with a fireball.  With only one functioning engine, the dynamic trio is about to face one of their greatest challenges yet.  Here we go:

“Hang on!”

With just one of the four rocket boosters attached to the back of the Daedalus 500 still working, we swerved to avoid another stream of flames coming from Elliot.  By now, the entire crowd was panicking.  A voice played over the intercom.

“Ladies and gentlemen, for your own safety, the Walt Disney World theme parks are now being closed early.  Please proceed calmly to the nearest exit.  We apologize for the inconvenience, and hope the rest of your stay is magical.”

The announcement didn’t help.  The twenty thousand people or so who hadn’t fled to the exits by now were stampeding down Main Street USA.  We, on the other hand, were dodging dragon’s fire, flying in lopsided spirals above the entrance to Tomorrowland.  Finally, Elliot gave up, and started flapping his tiny red wings, lifting up into the air and soaring off towards Tom Sawyer Island.  But we weren’t out of the clear just yet.  From somewhere behind us came the sound of laser fire-like from old episodes of Star Trek.  Burlida spun the Daedalus 500 around, making us directly face a fleet of about twenty miniature pirate ships, each holding two renegade Mimis.  Each Mimi also held a green laser gun, like from the Space Ranger Spin.  Only these laser guns looked deadly.  Burlida let out a string of curses, and pulled on her handlebars, sending us into a steep nosedive, narrowly avoiding a barrage of laser beams.

We soared down into Tomorrowland, which was sort of shaped like a keyhole, ringed by the PeopleMover, with most of the attractions built to support the transit system.  Burlida was clearly trying to lose the air force, but it wasn’t really working.  Finally, she pulled up and headed back towards Main Street, which was now completely deserted.  Once we passed the train station, the Mimi pursuers suddenly stopped in midair, then plummeted to the ground.  I had to shout over the roar of the one remaining booster.

“What the heck?!”

Burlida responded, almost out of breath.

“I’m guessing those pirate ships they hijacked don’t work outside of their respective park.  By the way, where do you think we should hide?  We only have enough fuel to get just outside the resort, and even that would be pushing it.  I recommend one of the hotels, but which one?”

“If we keep moving south, we should hit the Animal Kingdom Lodge pretty soon.  But be careful.  No doubt Zakesior’s got troops in the air, even if he doesn’t have to bring attractions to life.”

We soared over the World, and for a moment, I felt like a little kid again.  I could see the crest of Mount Gushmore off in the distance, the Tree of Life dead ahead… wait a sec.  We were off course.  Not by much, but with our pitiful amount of fuel, we could easily crash.  Luckily, just as we were soaring over the Kilimanjaro Safaris area, Burlida noticed and changed directions towards the Lodge.  That was when the unexpected happened-we were attacked by another air patrol, this time using cars from the TriceraTop Spin.  The Mimis were carrying average crossbows.  They opened fire.

Burlida swerved to avoid a volley of copper-tipped arrows that no doubt would have turned us into shish kebab.  We soared over Africa, and were about to land in Camp Minnie-Mickey and combat out attackers from the ground when a jet of orange flames flew into the one remaining rocket, setting the little fuel we had left ablaze, and sending us on a crash course with the ground.  I looked up to see where the fire had come from-Asia.  Zakesior was sniping at us all the way from Kali River Rapids.  Burlida managed to give the Daedalus 500 one last boost of magic, which was enough to make it cross Discovery Island and the made-up village of Anandapur.  Now there was just one problem-how to stop it.  Before I knew it, Burlida was screaming.

“We’re gonna crash!”

There was a smashing noise, a flash of white and brown, and the sense that I was being crushed-not a good feeling.  Then everything went black.

Well?  What do you think of this idea I have?  Stay tuned for the next installment of Mythodeath Today!
